Manufacturer Description

Recovered from the S.S. Central America wreckage, this 1857-S Type I $20 Liberty is graded Gem MS65 by PCGS. Well struck with excellent details, especially in Lady Liberty's hair and the stars. An apricot-gold hue accentuates the smooth fields and crisp devices. This Gold Double Eagle has outstanding original mint luster and is the perfect addition to any gold collection or registry set.The sinking of the S.S. Central America in September 1857, was an important event in maritime and numismatic history. At the time of its sinking, the S.S. Central America was carrying hoards of gold coins, owned by the U.S. Mint and affluent passengers. When the shipwreck was found in 1987 the sea floor was littered in gold coins. Thousands of gold coins and gold bars, in mostly uncirculated condition, from the U.S. mint and privately owned mints, were recovered and eventually sold. These coins are especially significant to collectors, investors, and history lovers.
